- A plant automation engineer is a manufacturing professional who designs and implements manufacturing technology to automate production processes. Many of these professionals start their careers in another engineering occupation, then hone their skills in automation. Some employers and industries refer to these professionals as controls engineers, systems engineers or instrumentation engineers.
- Most plant automation engineers earn a bachelor’s degree in a related engineering discipline such as electrical, mechanical, chemical or industrial engineering. Employers prefer educational programs accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology.
- Along with education, credentials such as Certified Automation Professional, which is administered by the International Society of Automation, can increase employment opportunities. The certification requires one year of professional experience for those with a bachelor’s degree and a passing grade on an exam.
