Jim Packman Celebrates Decades of Professional Excellence in Engineering

With 45 years of experience to his credit, Mr. Packman has excelled as a program manager and a production engineer with Matthews Associates Inc. since 2006. Prior to these appointments, he flourished as a manufacturing engineer for Zanxx and a chief engineer for Elicon Detroit. Previously, Mr. Packman began his career as the vice president of the CORP division and the general manager for Microdot Industries Inc. from 1974 to 1984.

Before embarking on his professional path, Mr. Packman pursued an education at the Detroit College of Applied Science, completing coursework in design and process engineering between 1954 and 1957. Subsequently, he obtained certifications and completed training in electrical and air conditioning at Lake Technical College, intensive review and practices in professional management for executives from the Presidents Association, electricity and data processing coursework at the DeVry Institute of Technology and sales and service at the Chrysler Training Center. He has additionally served in the U.S. Army, during which time he garnered valuable expertise in demolitions, graduated from Non-Commissioned Officers School and attained his honorable discharge as a staff sergeant. Following these accomplishments, Mr. Packman concluded his studies at the University of Detroit Mercy, accruing certification in computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing as well as statistical process control in 1987.

Beyond his responsibilities within the field, Mr. Packman has participated in numerous endeavors outside of his professional circles. From 1968 until 1973, he contributed to the 4-H Club as a horsemanship leader, training children in horse riding, care, and dressage while transporting horses for special events. In addition to his primary vocation, he remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to his areas of expertise, including the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers as a senior member since 1987. Moreover, Mr. Packman dedicates his spare time to his family, including his wife, Ruth, and his children, Amy, BJ, and Mathew.

Influenced by Leonard Hamilton and Mister Rogers, Mr. Packman attributes his success to his education, his professionalism and his ability to pay attention to the tasks at hand. Actively working within mechanics since the age of 14, he was drawn to engineering following the end of his military service, having developed a natural talent for the craft and an abiding interest in machinery. Out of his numerous career highlights, Mr. Packman is most proud to have worked as a corporate vice president for three plant operations, the first of which he was able to revitalize within three months.
